Since that initial planning in late August, the operator does not believe that the additional
Fish Creek dewatering point and modular treatment will be necessary. Long-term, the mine
is strongly considering water treatment facility, likely located near the prep plant, using
reverse osmosis or other methods to reduce salt loading to the stream system.
We visited the former barricade chamber location, where about 300 gallons per minute of
mine water was actively being taken back underground from the Fish Creek borehole facility.
The inspection then proceeded to the borehole facility where no discharge was noted to Fish
Creek. This facility treats mine water to acceptable levels of iron prior to discharge, when
necessary. The conductivity of the resident water in the last cell was measured at
approximately 5400 umhos/cm.
We discussed updating Map 16, Mine Water Balance, once the mine water handling system
is modified and improved to the desired configuration.
Processing Waste
The mine is preparing to strip additional topsoil above the refuse disposal area for expansion
of the pile. Disposal activities appeared normal and the pile appeared well maintained.
Revegetation
Significant thistle was noted along the road to the 61VIN facility and on topsoil stockpiles as
well. The operator is planning to treat these weeds this fall as recommended by the NRCS
for a more effective kill on this persistent noxious weed. Cattle were noted near the Fish
Creek borehole facility and near the 61VIN facility. The fence at the Fish Creek borehole is in
disrepair and requires attention to keep the cattle out of the facility area.
4
