Detailed information concerning
the findings of compliance can be found in the Regulations of the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board for Coal Mining.
The Division received an application for a permit renewal (RN-02) to continue surface coal
mining and/or reclamation operations at the Lorencito Canyon Mine. The application was
submitted on behalf of Lorencito Coal Company, LLC by Peak Project Management. Since
the application was submitted, the permit has been transferred from Lorencito Coal
Company LLC to New Elk Coal Company LLC as a result of Permit Transfer No. 2 (SO-
02). The mine is located on private lands within Las Animas County, Colorado. A detailed
legal description of the lands included within the permit area is described using the metes
and bounds method in Exhibit 2 of the permit application. The lands within the permit area
are part of the original Maxwell Land Grant which was not surveyed within the scope of the
U.S. survey system of public lands. It can generally be described as lands south of the
Purgatoire River, lands east of Cow Canyon, lands north of Puertecito Canyon, and lands
west of Little Jeff Canyon, covering approximately 3142 acres.
