08/14/2008 15:01 15703456610 WASHINGTON COUNTY PAGE i1,i
18 Soil Survey
and maintenance of roads, streets, driveways, and
sidewalks. Dikes and channels that have outlets for
floodwater can be used to protect buildings and onsite
sewage disposal systems from flooding. Roads and
streets should be designed to offset the low strength of
the soil.
This map unit is in capability subclasses Ilw, irrigated,
and Illw, nonirrigated. It is in the Overflow range site.
12-Canyon gravelly loam. This shallow, well drained
soil is on hills, knolls, and ridges. It formed in calcareous
loamy material derived dominantly from sandstone.
Slope is 2 to 6 percent. Areas are generally elongated
and are 5 to 80 acres.
Typically, the surface layer is grayish brown gravelly
loam about 4 inches thick. The underlying material is
mainly light brownish gray very tine sandy loam and loam
about 10 inches thick over fine-grained sandstone.
Included in this unit are small areas of deep and
moderately deep soils. Included areas make up about 25
percent of the total acreage.
Permeability of this Canyon soil is moderate Available
water capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 6 to
20 inches. Runoff is medium, and the hazard of water
erosion is moderate. The hazard of soil blowing is
moderate.
Most areas of this unit are used as rangeland. A few
areas are used for nonirrigated crops.
This unit is poorly suited to cultivated crops. It is
limited mainly by shallowness of the soil, the very low
available water capacity, and the hazard of soil blowing.
The potential plant community on this unit is mainly
little bluestem, sldeoats grams, prairie sandreed, sand
bluestem, and sedges.
The suitability of the soil in this unit for rangeland
seeding is poor. The main limitations are shallowness of
the soil and the very low available water capacity.
Figure t.-Area of Bridgeport silt loam In Overflow range site. Limestone Breaks In background.
