V c OFFICE o ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
September 9, 2008
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Rm. 215
Afy) -03 ?
RECEIVED
SEP 1 1 1008 ',,--
Division or Neciamat;on,
Mining and Safety C%
Denver, CO 80203 /
Re: LKA International, Inc., Golden Wonder Mine (Permit No. M-1978-091-UG) (CHS #53268)
Dear Mr. Oswald:
Thank you for your correspondence dated August 29, 2008 (received by our office on September 2,
2008) regarding the subject project.
Based on the map and information provided, a search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory
indicated that at least two cultural resources have been recorded within or very near the proposed
permit area. Because the map that was provided does not clearly indicate the topographic location of
the proposed project, it is not clear if either of these sites are located within the proposed permit area.
Site 5HN380 (Red Cloud Mine) is recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
(NRHP) based on a field assessment. Site 5HN339 (Packer Massacre Site) remains unevaluated in
terms of its potential NRHP eligibility. We recommend that mining-related activities avoid both sites.
Should human remains be discovered during resource extraction activities the requirements under State
law CRS 24-80 part 13 apply and must be followed.
Please note that our review of your project is expedited when you indicate the extent of the
proposed permit area on a legible portion of the appropriate and clearly identified 7.5 minute
USGS topographic map.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. If we may be of further assistance, please contact Shina
duVall, Section 106 Compliance Coordinator, at (303) 866-4674 or shina.duvaUgchs.state.co.us.
Sincerely,
dward C.
