(WWL) has completed the Spring 2008 hydrological reconnaissance of
the Whirlwind Mine and Packrat Mine areas. This reconnaissance was one of two planned field
assessments, the other to occur in the Fall of 2008. This report summarizes the findings of the
reconnaissance work conducted in June 2008.
WWL conducted the hydrological reconnaissance to identify key hydrological features and
hydrogeological relationships between hydrostratigraphic units in the vicinity of the mines. Surface
water features identified in proximity to the mines were characterized by nature of occurrence, and
where possible, flow measurements and water quality sampling was conducted. In addition, water
sources to the underground mine workings were identified and quantified, and where appropriate, water
chemistry was evaluated. WWL identified surface and underground features that should be monitored
for nature of occurrence, water quantity, and water quality over time (life of mine operations and
possibly after mine closure).
Attachments that accompany this report include:
Attachment A Photographs
Attachment B Field Sampling Forms
Attachment C Raw Analytical Data
FIELDWORK
WWL conducted hydrological reconnaissance of the Whirlwind Mine and Packrat Mine area on June
18 and 19, 2008. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to inspect and assess the surface and
underground hydrologic setting in the mine area as described above. Field work components consisted
of the following:
1. Underground tour of the Whirlwind Mine workings (June 18).
2. Surface reconnaissance of the ore-bearing sandstone unit outcrop area (June 18).
3. Water quality sampling of selected sites (June 19).
Applications in Earth Science 743 Horizon Court Suite 330, Grand Junction, CO 81506
Phone: (970) 242-0170 Fax: (970) 242-0270
