III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Janet Binns of CDRMS. The Grassy Gap mine is a reclaimed surface
mine. The mine permit and reclamation liability bond have been revoked by DRMS. Cattle were on the permit area
at the time of the inspection. No sheep were encountered during the inspection.
Roads: California crossings on access roads to Pit 4 and Pits 2& 3 remained effective in diverting water off the
roadways and into the roadside ditches.
Hydrologic Balance: Pit 5 spoil spring was trickling to Pond 5. Spoil spring flow is running alongside the north side
of the access road, but crosses the road at the dip and flow into Pond 5. The Pit 5 pond holding weed choked water
and was discharging at a trickle. Pond 5 embankment appears stable and the spillway is fine.
Reve etag tion: The vegetation was very dry. The area has been heavily grazed by livestock this season. Although the
site shows signs of heavy grazing, no new erosional features were noted. Some weedy species are present;Curly cup
gumweed, But noxious species were not encountered.
Reclamation Success.: All reclaimed pits had fair vegetation. Gullying appeared confined to roadways but the pits
were still accessible via the permanent roads. The landowner generally moves livestock prior to the beginning of
September and then manages the property for big game hunting, so it is expected that the livestock will be removed
form the site shortly.
