' To satisfy the permit requirement (Exhibit 19C), Mountain Coal Company
located and photographed these water resources and prepared reports
' presenting these findings. This document is a follow-up to the Mountain
Coal Company, West Elk Mine 2005, 2006, and 2007 Water Resources
Project report.
PROJECT AREA
The project area is located on lands managed by the USDA Forest Service,
Rocky Mountain Region, Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison National
Forest, Paonia Ranger District. It encompasses Sections 20, 21, 22, 23, 25,
26, 27, 289 299 321335 34, and 35 of T.13 S., R. 90 W. 6th PM. and Sections 3
' and 4, T. 14S. R.90W. 6th PM.
SURVEY METHODS
Maps and photographs were obtained from the USFS giving current
stockpond and tank locations. These items were discussed with Forest
Service personnel and were correlated to Table 8 and Map 37 of the current
mine plan. Coordinates for each water resource were recorded using a
Garmin Etrex GPS unit. The coordinate system was degree, minute, second,
1/10 second with the WSG 84 datum being utilized. Field surveys were
made July 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 23, and 24, 2008. A total of 50 water resources
were found and recorded during the 2008 field season. Coordinates
disalaved for each water resource indicate the location of the photo-
point. Each resource was photographed and recorded as to parameters such
as high water line, present water line and whether the pond was wet or dry.
A dry erase board was utilized to identify each pond in the photo. Pond
name, coordinates, direction the photo was taken toward and date are
recorded on the board. Photographs were taken with a Canon PowerShot
SD 1000 Digital ELPH camera. Each photo title in this report lists the
pond/spring name or number and date the photo was taken. Each pond in the
2008 report can be found on the same page as the 2007 report.
EXAMPLE: (P-10, 7-9-08)
2
