SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
Fifty ponds and springs were located and photographed in July 2008. Of
these fifty ponds and springs, 33 contained water while 17 were dry at the
time of the survey in July. (Refer to Appendix B, Table 8. Summary of U.S.
Forest Service Water Resources near the West Elk Mine.
Of the 50 ponds and springs identified, only the following 19 appear to hold
water or run throughout the summer during a normal year: SLP-1, P-19, P-
22, P-18, P-96, Sly Spring, P-70, P-55, P-57, Lower Cow Camp Spring, P-
25, P-29, P-37, P-93, P-44, High Deer Creek Spring, P-23, P-24, and P-95.
P-86, P-15, and P-28 were dry prior to 2008, but contained water when
surveyed this year.
It seems that the water resources surveyed this year have remained basically
the same as in 2006. Only minor changes have occurred, probably due to
natural changes in seasonal and daily precipitation and temperature. Many of
the ponds were much fuller this year since precipitation in 2008 was greater.
Slight differences in dates the ponds were surveyed could also have had an
effect on these minor changes.
53
