Sampling and Analysis Plan
7.0 SAMPLE ANALYSIS AND ANALYTICAL PROTOCOLS
Surface-water and groundwater samples will be analyzed in accordance with the analytical
schedule presented in Table 1. The table shows a comprehensive list of analytes that have been
selected to support conventional hydrochemistry characterization and assessment of potential
environmental impacts associated with development of the RD&D lease. The field parameters to
be collected at each monitoring station are also shown in Table 1.
The analytical schedule presented in Table 1 was established to provide comprehensive
assessment of baseline water-quality. The analytical program may be modified for subsequent
sampling efforts as appropriate based on the baseline characterization results.
The groundwater parameters are partially defined by the parameters listed for numeric standards
of the primary streams in the vicinity of the site (Hunter Creek and Piceance Creek) as
promulgated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) Water
Quality Control Commission (WQCC). Analytes that have numeric standards include dissolved
oxygen, pH, boron, cyanide, nitrite, ammonia, iron, manganese, selenium, arsenic, silver,
cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, and zinc. Standards have also been
established for fecal (F) coli and escherichia (E) coli. Other analytes are being evaluated to
interpret and characterize a particular water source and to examine trends over time.
Samples will be received by the analytical laboratory in accordance with chain-of-custody
procedures. These samples will be analyzed for metals using methods detailed in Test Methods
for Evaluating Solid Waste, Revised Methods. SW-846. Third Ed. U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, Washington, D.C. After digestion, all samples will be analyzed for metals by
inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry in accordance with SW-846 methods 6010 and
6020. The trace metals aluminum, arsenic, antimony, barium, beryllium, cadmium, cobalt,
chromium, lead, molybdenum, selenium, silver, uranium, and vanadium will be analyzed using
inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry (Method 200.8 at ACZ Laboratories, Inc.). The
metals copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc will be analyzed using inductively coupled
plasma (Method 200.7 at ACZ Laboratories, Inc.).
The report of analytical results will include a cover letter from the laboratory identifying the
sample group and any non-compliant control results. Attached to the cover letter will be a
summary of sample results and a summary of quality control results. The summary of quality
American Shale Oil, LLC 13
