r
elevated concentrations of dissolved metals such as arsenic, selenium, iron, etc. to the surface water
system will negatively effect East Salt Creek water.
Since much of the concerns expressed above relate to water quality and its effect on wildlife, we believe
it would be in everyone's interest to understand what water quality standards are being considered for
this project. To better guide this decision, we believe that the baseline surface water quality of East Salt
Creek should be more thoroughly investigated. This sampling would show how the water quality at
SW-1 and GW-1 compare to the East Salt Creek surface water, and whether the addition of mine water
and leachate will, as CAM suggests, improve water quality. We recommend sampling at multiple points
above and below the proposed discharge site. Such sampling should be done during the irrigation
season, as CAM described, as well as the low flow period. Because of the Bookcliff's erosive soils, we
recommend that water samples should be collected when the stream is clear, and unaffected by storm
water runoff.
I would like to thank you for considering the needs of wildlife in the energy development process. Do
not hesitate to call if you have any questions, or if you would wish to discuss these recommendations in
further depth.
5TT Romatzke
Acting Area Wildlife Manager
cc.
