Berhan Keffelew
August 15, 2008
Page 2
Finally, we offer additional comments with respect to Attachment 7 of the applicant's submission
to Teller County entitled, "Historical Resources of the Cresson Project - Mine Life Extension
Area." The application states that Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company [CCV]
contracted with a consultant firm, Cuartelejo HP Associates, Inc., to review documentation
regarding known sites and conduct a field reconnaissance. We understand as a result of an
August 13, 2008 telephone conversation between Jeff Campbell of Cripple Creek and Victor
Gold Mining Company and Dan Corson that there is not a written report with more detail than
Appendix 7, and none is planned to be written.
Of the eight structural sites listed in Attachment 7, five do not have site forms on file with our
office. Those five sites are the May B. Incline Ore Chute, International Mine, the
abovementioned Ore Sorting House adjacent to the Simms Mine, Forest Queen Ore Bin or
Sorting House [5TL.2602], and Cameron Mine and Pinnacle Park Of those sites documented on
forms, one site, the Anchoria-Leland Mine Complex [5TL.344] was determined as officially not
eligible by our office on April 5, 1992. The Grace-Greenwood Mine [5TL.2073] is listed in our
database as field eligible, entered on June 1, 1996. This means that the person completing the
inventory form recommended that the site is eligible for listing on the National Register of
Historic Places and State Register of Historic Properties. Finally, the Deadwood Headframe
[5TL.283] was considered on June 13, 1990 to need additional information to determine whether
the site was individually eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places or State
Register of Historic Properties, but it appears to have been subsequently moved into the Cripple
Creek National Historic Landmark District. As stated previously, it appears that the Deadwood
Headframe and the Ore Sorting House adjacent to the Simms Mine are within the boundaries of
the National Historic Landmark District.
It would be difficult for us to comment on the individual significance of these eight sites without
new site forms for the five sites not so recorded, or re-evaluation forms for the sites that were
recorded over ten years ago. Additionally and ideally, these sites should be evaluated along with
sites surrounding the affected area of mining to determine whether they contribute to the larger
undesignated Cripple Creek historic mining district [5TL.19861.
Please let us know if you have any questions. You may contact Dan Corson, our
Intergovernmental Services Director, at [303] 866-2673.
Sincerely,
Susan M. Collins
State Archaeologist and Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer
Cc: Jeff M. Fugate, Assistant Attorney General
Paul Clarkson, Director, Teller County Development Services
