Hydrologic Balance
As shown in the photograph above, afternoon rains have been frequent and heavy at times.
Pond 7 and pond 8 held significant quantities of water but neither were discharging. Pond 4
held a small amount of water in the southeast corner. All five containments also held modest
amounts of water. Ditches along the Purgatoire River and culverts directing flow to pond 7
were found open and functional.
Pond 7
Pond 8
Roads
Recent rains have resulted in a rough surface on the access road to the RDA. This road
surface should be regraded as soon as dry conditions return.
Processing Waste
Abundant rains over the last month or so has resulted in continued rill and gully erosion on
the exposed surface of the Refuse Disposal Area (RDA). This eroded material has slowly
been deposited near the crest of the refuse pile surface causing the effective elimination of
the berm along the crest and the upper most revegetated outslope. At some point recently,
surface flows breached the berm and flowed over the upper most fill outslope in at least two
places. Obvious gullies were observed and minor flow in one location was still active as
shown in the photographs below.
4
