I do not
know the details for comparison at this time, but I believe that there may be an attempt to expand on the drainage
related work. I prefer not to speculate at this point given the ongoing efforts to secure additional funding and the
probability that the total plan will be adjusted if and when additional dollars are brought to the project.
You might want to check back in later this summer or early fall.
Thanks, David
From: Gorton, III, William T. It looks like you have a quite a cast of players involved. I wonder why the COAG folks have not
stepped up to address the mine closures even on a temporary basis. Regarding the overall grading plan, what is
different than I proposed?
From: Berry, David [mailto:David.Berry@state.co.us]
Sent: Monday, August 11, 2008 3:51 PM
To: Gorton, III, William T.; Berry, David
Cc: Pineda, Loretta
Subject: FW: Franklin mine
Bill - We offer the following response to your inquiry of August 7, 2008. The DRMS Inactive Mines Program (IMP)
is now managing the Franklin reclamation project, and the project is pending resolution of several factors. Shaft
closure is one pending issue (see attached letter). Structural demolition details are also pending, given the
ongoing and unresolved attempts by the landowner to evict the individual currently residing in the area.
IMP is also working with the Clear Creek Watershed Foundation to coordinate the Franklin reclamation with other
work in the Gilson Gulch area. This is occurring to leverage more project funding for the Franklin reclamation.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE) is also involved in this project
coordination and funding, and the CDPHE agreement was not available until last week. Major work will not occur
until next year; however, IMP will secure the shafts if not otherwise done by August 15, 2008. IMP work to provide
a coordinated project involving expanded funding has involved additional work and time.
I am also providing a copy of this message to Loretta Pineda (Director of the Inactive Mines Program).
Thanks, David
8/12/2008
