Sediment is the most likely pollutant to be associated with the mine
since the access road and pad are exposed surfaces. However,
sediment has not been observed as a stormwater issue with the
exception of the historic erosional rill at the toe of the Level 6 road.
Several newly placed bmps control the stormwater as a run-on
source which can pick up loose soil on the road and pad and create
sediment. A run-on channel was carved into the inside track of the
Level 6 road to capture run-on and route it to roll and dip water bars.
Baffles comprised of boulder to cobble rock or coarse alluvium were
placed at the waterbar outfalls to control stormwater energy and
allow for sediment settling. These baffles will be maintained so that
no sediment is released to off-areas.
iv. Other Pollution Prevention Measures
The mine site will be regularly inspected and maintained with GGI
oversight. The identified pollution prevention measures described
herein capture all those sources identified over time. The Golden
Wonder has been in operation (on and off) for over 100 years. The
existing and newly proposed management practices address all
stormwater concerns and any potential concerns as yet to become
realized (e.g. waste rock acid rock drainage). If additional measures
are needed, GGI is responsible for identifying the appropriate
management practice and submitting all necessary information for this
SWMP.
c. Preventive Maintenance
Preventative maintenance is achieved with the continuous oversight of
mine activities to assure environmental compliance. GGI personnel have
been delegated the responsibility for these activities and will take an active
role with mine activities to assure environmental protection. A part of the
oversight responsibilities will be to review the preventative maintenance
requirements for in-place management practices that control stormwater.
Any management practice that begins to show sign of erosion or failure
will be actively maintained (e.g. the perimeter pad berm, or toe of waste
rock slope channel). The integrity of these features will be regularly
monitored (at least four visits per year) as part of the ongoing routine
monitoring as required by the mine reclamation permit.
Maintenance of pollution prevention measures will occur as follows:
• Mine machinery and vehicles will be maintained in good operational
order in order to prevent fuel leaks.
• The use of solvents and lubricants will be confined to the workshop
where containment of any incidental spills can be accomplished. Spills
will be immediately contained with the use of absorbant materials, and
removed via excavation (with the use of hand tools or other) and
placement into dedicated drums (set of pallets). Materials will be
properly disposed of by following standard manifest requirements and
coordination with the appropriate landfill.
