The purpose of the second well is both to increase the available pumping capacity for
mine dewatering, and to provide a backup dewatering well. The IORT mine dewatering installation is
important to TCC's ongoing mining and related operations, as it supplies a significant portion of the
operational water required.
Water from the existing IORT Mine Dewatering Well, which pumps accumulated mine inflows from a
sump in the sealed Eastern Mining District, is pumped to the surface by a 320hp high-capacity
submersible pump, at a rate of approximately 550 gpm. The pump discharge is currently transferred by a
series of surface and underground pipelines to the Area 1 Pit in the TCC Mine Facilities Area for use in
either coal preparation operations or for storage and subsequent use as a back-up source for the
operational mine water system.
As part of the 6MN facilities project (TR05-48, MR07-224), TCC is currently constructing a new pipeline
running approximately 7,750 feet from the existing TORT Dewatering Pipeline to the existing 6MN
Million-Gallon Tank. The pipeline will be constructed of 10-inch HDPE pipe, buried to a depth of
approximately six feet, with one sub-grade crossing (bored under) of Fish Creek. This new pipeline will
allow water from the IORT Dewatering installation to be routed either to the Area 1 Pit or to an existing
mine water borehole at the 6MN facilities for direct transfer and use underground.
The I ORT Dewatering Well No. 2 will include a pumping system installation similar to the existing IORT
Dewatering Well. The new 320hp pump will provide the capability to supply water to the Area 1 Pit at a
rate of approximately 550gpm, or deliver water to the 6MN facilities at a rate of approximately 700gpm
(in addition to the approximately 550gpm supply to the Area 1 Pit from the existing IORT Dewatering
• Well).
The ancillary facility requirements for the new l ORT Dewatering Well No. 2 will include modification of
the existing drainage and sediment control system, extension of the existing facilities pad, a minor
G:\Environmental\REVISION\MINOR-RV\MR08-228 TORT Dewatering Borehole #2\MR08-228 TORT Dewatering Well No.
2 TL.doc
