• rainfall factor could be assumed for the reclaimed areas, however, this will not be done to
be conservative in the estimate.
For a discussion of this adjustment to the rainfall factor, see Design Hydrology and
Sedimentology of Small Catchments by Han, Barfield and Hayes.
Soil Erodibility Factor "K"
This is a measure of the soil's susceptibility to erosion. It is dependent upon the soil's
resistance to detachment by rainfall and by its ability to absorb water through infiltration.
The soil erodibility factor "K", was determined from consultation of the NRCS Soil Survey
of San Miguel Area, Colorado. The disturbed area is comprised several different soil types,
and a composite of their erodibility factor was calculated for the Universal Soil Loss
Equation.
The reclaimed soil is primarily the same soil redistributed over the regraded areas after
mining. It is similar to the pre-mine soil and should also have the same "K" factor.

•
14
