The seasonal variation in precipitation is dependent on
the prevalent westerly and southwesterly jet streams which bring moist air from the
Pacific and Gulf of California. Prevailing ground level winds are from the northwest.
Summer storms are generally intense and of short duration, but can produce large
amounts of precipitation, mostly as rain and hail. Rainfall during summer months
constitutes the largest amount of seasonal precipitation. Precipitation during the winter
and early spring primarily occurs as snowfall. The highest amount of snowfall typically
occurs during the spring.
Average monthly pan evaporation data for the site are reported in SWC, 2008.
Evaporation occurs throughout the year with an average annual value of approximately
44.29 inches. Evaporation data are summarized in Table 2.4.
Table 2.4 Cresson Project average evaporation data
Month Evaporation (inches)
January 2.23
February 2.30
March 3.01
April 3.35
May 4.43
June 6.54
July 6.00
August 4,78
September 3.73
October 3.45
November 2.40
December 2.08
Annual 44.29
'Values represent average site evaporation values, excluding August 1999.
2736
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Water Management Consultants
