MINED LAND WILDLIFE STATEMENT/UATI
For limited impact and select regular mine appl'cations
The following information pertaining to wildli e is provided for
use by Mined Land Reclamation Board in their onsideration of a
mining permit for:
Name/Type and Location of Mine (L~gal}
Wildlife Species List:
The mine is located in a very wildlife diverse area The following is a ist of some of the species
that occupy the Glover pit site or were likely to have been found on th site prior to the Glover
Mine's mining activity: Lesser Prairie Chicken, Mourning Dove, Mul Deer, Pronghorn, Coyote,
Bobcat, Cottontail Rabbit, Jack Rabbit, Scaled Quail, Northern Harrie ,Red-Tailed Hawk,
American Kestrel, Plateau Lizard, Great Plains Skink, Western Rattles ake, Lesser Earless
Lizard, Collared Lizard, and Texas Horned Lizard (this list is not exha five).

Endangered/Critical Species/Impacted:
The critical species most likely to be impacted is the Lesser Prairie C ~cken. The Lesser Prairie
Chicken is a "State Threatened" species and a candidate species for f eral listing.

Critical Habitats/Vegetative Co®munities Impac d:
The Glover pit is located on the interface between sandsage shrub land d short grass prairie. The
draws are sandy and are covered in a mix of sandsage and fortis. Th areas above the draws are
vegetated with blue gramma, buffalo grass, sideoats gramma, and cca_ Some of the site's
disturbed areas are covered in old world bluestem, broomed snakewee ,and sand dropseed.

Assessment of Impact:
For most wildlife species, the mining activity is likely to have a inimal affect. Most of the
wildlife species that use the site are either fairly tolerant to human d' bance or are found in great
abundance throughout Baca County and the Eastern Plains. The end o tcome of the mine maybe a
positive one for wildlife. If the reclamation is done in a wildlife frien y manner, the reclamation
may result in better wildlife habitat than was originally found on the si .The reclamation could be
done in such a way as to greatly improve habitat for mule deer ands ed quail.
The greatest negative impact of the mine may be to lesser p ~ e chickens. Lesser prairie ',
chickens do occupy the sandsage and yucca communities throughout a area. The closest known
prairie chicken lek is 1.5 mi. to the south of the mine. Population tren for lesser prairie chickens
indicate a severe decline in bird numbers (less than 30 birds counted on eks on similar habitat on the
Comanche National Grasslands in 2007).
Research has shown that prairie chickens often show low toleran to some forms of human
disturbances. For instance, lesser prairie chickens have shown a ong avoidance behavior to
manmade structures such as compressor stations and oiI and gas w lls. The noise and activity
generated by mining activity could have an impact on prairie chicke in the area (2 mile radius).
There maybe ways in which the noise disturbance of the mine cool me minimized. The mine's
hours of operation could be limited. Noise disturbance is likely to be greatest during the time
surroundin dawn and dusk when wind is not resent. Midda o ti ns would likel have less of
