Goodrich, Gary
From: Carl Poch [cpoch99@yahoo.com]
Sent: Monday, May 19, 2008 6:17 AM
To: Fine, Alan
Cc: O'Connor, Peter; Goodrich, Gary
Subject: RE: Operation expansion in Cripple Creek
Follow Up Flag: Follow up
Flag Status: Red
Mr. Fine:
Thank you so much for your kind letter. Mr. Goodrich and Mr.
O'Connor have been receiving correspondence from me for the past three months. I have not
heard a single word from either of them.
None of us want the attention that will occur if I bring the 150 people and press to the
public hearings.
You might want to instruct these two to seriously consider the following and then agree to
drop plans to strip mine the 42 acres in question. They have 5458 acres to work on in an
attempt to obtain the 2 billion dollars of profit. (3.3 million proven gold reserves times
$600/oz profit).
In the Anglo Gold Ashanti mine's application # 9 Larry Newcomer, vice-president signed
(and notarized) nine responsibilities as a Permittee. I believe at least one of his
agreements is untrue.
3. If your mining and reclamation operations affect areas beyond the boundaries of an
approved permit boundary, substantial civil penalties to you as a permittee can result.
Evidently, this responsibility doesn't apply to this mine since they are well aware that
their operations will significantly impact outside of their permitted boundary. Actually,
only their operations on 42 acres of their 5500 permitted acres will impact outside of the
boundary. If the mine were to forgo strip mining on the 42 acre hillside east of Cripple
Creek, the mine
would be acting responsibly as a Permittee. Since the mine
won't act responsibly, it is up to the Teller county commissioners and the Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety to require they not strip mine these 42 acres so they will
be in compliance with the document Larry Newcomer signed.
How exactly will the mine affect areas beyond their approved permit boundary?
The new Heritage Center will need to be evacuated during blasting - it's outside the
permit boundary.
The relocated Gold Camp Trail (part of the American Discovery
Trail) will need to be cleared during blasting - it's outside the permit boundary.
Noise, dust, lights day and night will impact all of Cripple Creek - it's outside the
permit boundary.
The value of the homes in Cripple Creek will decline by about 25% because of the loss of
the hillside (that's $15,728,565) - it's outside the permit boundary.
Wildlife according to the mine should go elsewhere - it's outside the permit boundary.
Increased heavy truck traffic will use the already crumbling streets of Cripple Creek -
it's outside the permit boundary.
Visitors to the Molly Kathleen mine just outside the boundary will "balk" at being 1000
feet underground while blasting takes place - it's outside the permit boundary.
1
