Peaboay
PEABODY ENERGY
Mr. Michael Trujillo
Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW)
600 Pueblo Reservoir Road
Pueblo, CO 81005
RE: CDOW Consultation Related to Coal Exploration Activities
Dear Mr. Trujillo
3001 W. Shamrell Blvd.
Suite 110
Flagstaff, AZ 86001
(928) 913-9205
Colorado Coal Resources, LLC (CCR), a subsidiary of Peabody Energy, is planning a total of ten (10) coal
exploration holes on the Hill Ranch property located approximately 15 miles west of Trinidad and just south and east
of Weston, Colorado. The center location of the property is approximately N370 6' Lat. W1040 50' Long. It is our
understanding that CDOW has familiarity with this property because of the participation of the Hill Ranch in the
CDOW's ranching for wildlife program and other ongoing contacts.
The coal exploration holes are to be located on existing coal bed methane (CBM) well pads and access will be by
existing roads to these CBM well pads. There are no new disturbances anticipated. The drill rigs used for coal
exploration are smaller than a large oil and gas drill rig which further minimizes any opportunities for new disturbance.
The drill hole locations are detailed on the attached map and table. Any mud pits or cuttings and associated
materials from the core holes will be on the existing CBM well pads and these will be removed and the pad or roads
regraded. Right of entry and other agreements are being finalized with the Hill Ranch at this time.
By this letter, CCR requests a consultation report for the coal exploration activities and locations described above and
in the attached maps and table. The CDOW consultation report for this project will address the necessary
requirements for completion of a Notice of Intent to Explore Involving Removal of 250 Tons or Less of Coal (NOI) as
outlined in the regulations of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (CDRMS). Further, the
consultation report will allow CCR to address any concerns of the CDOW.
Please find attached two pdf images of maps showing the exploration drill hole locations and an EXCEL table with
supporting and location information for the drill holes.
Your timely consideration of the request for a consultation report on this project is appreciated. CCR is required to
complete the drilling program by August 25th in consideration of hunting commitments on the Hill Ranch property.
Please contact me as soon as possible if you have any questions or require additional information.
Sincerely,
Vern Pfannenstiel
Manger, Environmental Services -West
Peabody Investment Corp.
Attachments
cc: George Wagner, Peabody Energy
John Rusnak, Peabody Energy
John Musick, CDRMS
