Division of Reclamation,
Water Resources Evaluation - Mining and Safety
Follow-up to July 16, 2008 memo to Travis Marshall from Kate Pickford
Steve and Travis,
This letter is a follow-up to our letters of July 3, 2008 and July 15, 2008, and specifically replies to
the Division's memo of July 16, 2008 from Kate Pickford to Travis Marshall.
1. Monitoring Plan.
a. Baseline time period. We propose monitoring groundwater elevations in the
monitoring wells during the baseline period at least twice per month from the time of
installation until at least December, 2008 (assuming wells get installed in July or
August of this year). Monitoring the wells 2x per month will provide more of a
response to irrigation than monitoring only 1x per month. Monitoring shall include
observations of groundwater levels below the top of casing, the height of the casing
above the ground level, and shall be reported as actual elevations from a bench mark
of known elevation. Additionally, site conditions shall be noted, such as irrigation
practices, snow cover, snow melt, rainfall, and the condition or operation of nearby;
irrigation ditches, e.g., either dry or running water etc.
b. Pit Operation. Water levels in monitoring wells shall be monitored once per month
during any time the pit is actively pumping water from or needing to dewater the
workings in the pit. Observations shall be recorded on the same log sheets used
during the baseline monitoring.
2. Action levels / trigger points.
i
a. Domestic wells. If the pit is being actively dewatered, and the water levels in all the
monitoring wells drop at least eight (8) feet below the seasonally low water level
elevations observed during the baseline monitoring period, the pit operator shall
244 Hutton Ave., Rifle, CO 81650 PH / Fax (970) 625-5433 pcurrier@wrc-Ilc.com,
