Appendix A - Vegetation Samplingfor 2003
1.0 INTRODUCTION
ARCADIS-US, Inc. proposes to conduct vegetation surveys on behalf of Basin Resources, Inc. (Basin)
for the purpose of submitting this information as a request to the Colorado Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety (CDRMS) for approval of year 2008 sampling event for proposed Phase II bond
release on the NW-1 vent site area (NW-1) at Basin's Golden Eagle Mine (Permit No. C-81-013). The
NW-1 area is approximately 1.2 acres and is located in'/4'/4 Sec Township 33 South, Range 67 West.
Basin is eligible for Phase II bond release upon proving successful establishment of approved vegetation
species on each reclaimed area with total cover of at least 90 percent of each corresponding reference
area, and demonstrating that erosion is controlled on the reclaimed areas.
2.0 REVEGETATION SUCCESS CRITERIA
ARCADIS-US, Inc. proposes to measure vegetation cover and species diversity for the purpose of
determining revegetation success on the NW-I reclaimed area. There are no revegetation requirements for
herbaceous vegetation production or shrub density specified for Phase II release. The methodology of the
vegetation survey is summarized in the methods section.
The approved reclamation success standards for the NW-1 Reclaimed Area, as specified by the CDMG
during permitting for the Golden Eagle Mine, are as follows:
Cover - Vegetation cover will be restored on the NW-1 Reclaimed Area to 90 percent of the cover on the
Rangeland AVF Reference Area as sampled in 2006.
Species Diversity - The diversity standard for the NW-1 reclaimed area calls for the establishment of two
cool-season grasses, two warm-season grasses, and one perennial forb, each with a relative cover value
between 5 and 60 percent.
3.0 METHODS
The vegetation survey will be conducted in July 2008. Vegetation cover and species diversity will be
measured on the NW-1 reclamation area.
Vegetation cover and species diversity will be sampled using 15 randomly placed 0.1 square meter
quadrats. The quadrat design follows that of Daubenmire (1959) and is a 20 cm by 50 cm rectangle frame,
with reference markings indicating 1, 10, 25, 50 and 100 % of the area inside the frame. For each
quadrat, cover will be recorded as rock, bare ground, litter, or live vegetation. Cover will be estimated to
the nearest whole percent for each species present; live plants will be identified to the species level. The
relative cover of each species detected will be calculated as follows (Equation 1):
(1)
% Relative Cover of Species A'=
% Cover of Species X
% Total Vegetative Cover
Golden Eagle_NWV Phase 11 proposal 7-14-08.doe A-2
