In 2006, one new area of disturbance was created in the construction of a disposal cell
for the test mine pond solids on the ridge adjacent to production well 28-21. The
disturbance for the disposal cell was approximately two acres. The disposal cell area
was also reclamation seeded in December 2006. Photo 9 shows the disposal area
near well 28-21 in October 2006.

Photo 9 - Disposal cell for test mine pond solids constructed on ridge top near production Well 28-21 in
October 2006.
Dry conditions and the harsh exposure of this ridge to heat and wind may have
contributed to minimal reclamation plant establishment from the initial 2006 broadcast
seeding. In fall 2007, the disposal cell disturbance area was drill seeded with the
modified BLM approved seed mix and no-till drilling equipment. In order to break up
the patterned appearance of plants established from mechanized drill seeding
equipment the seed was applied in one pattern perpendicular to the road shown just
above then the second application was drill seeded in a diagonal pattern to the first
pass in all areas where it was feasible and safe to do so.
The same area is shown in Photo 10 in June 2008 following good precipitation
throughout the winter and into late spring. The drilled seed shows high germination
and growth in this environment as the seeds are protected under the shallow layer of
soil and conditions were more optimal.
American Soda.
