• Two piezometers will be used to furnish groundwater level measurements,
• Baseline data will be collected from the piezometers on a monthly basis (collected prior to
dewatering operations),
• The piezometers will be monitored on a monthly basis during dewatering operations and
the baseline data will be used to evaluate potential affects to the groundwater table,
• A plan will be developed to mitigate potential off-site affects to the groundwater table and
surrounding groundwater users, and
• Monitoring data will be provided to the Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS)
in annual reports.
Two piezometers will be installed on the SerFer site. The locations of the piezometers were
discussed and agreed upon with DRMS staff. A site map illustrating the location of the two
piezometers is presented in Figure 3. The piezometers will be constructed of 4-inch slotted PVC
pipe and will extend through the entire length of the unconsolidated material and into bedrock
Lean 3/4 inch pea gravel was used as filter packing around the slotted pipe. A typical piezometer
completion diagram is presented in Figure 4.
Prior to the beginning of dewatering activities, water level measurements will be collected from the
piezometers on a monthly basis. The baseline monitoring data from the piezometers will be
summarized and plotted. Once the base line data is collected, an action level will be determined
and approved by DRMS.
During mining and dewatering activities, the piezometers will be monitored for groundwater
elevation once per month. Field observations will be made to assure that the piezometer casing
and surrounding area are in good condition. Depth to water and elevation measurements will be
recorded in a field notebook and stored in a data management system for quality control and
reporting.
If the groundwater elevation in the piezometer closest to the objectors' property drops to the
specified action level, the DRMS will be notified within five (5) working days. If the measured
groundwater elevations are above the identified action levels, monthly monitoring data will be
submitted to the DRMS with other required annual reports or as specified by DRMS staff.
MITIGATION PLAN
If groundwater elevation in any of the Piezometers falls below the identified action levels, the
operator will submit further investigation results and/or a more comprehensive mitigation plan
within 30 days of the action level measurement.
The operator does not anticipate dewatering operations at the site to affect groundwater levels in
the wells or surrounding landowners. However, if the groundwater elevation in the Piezometers
drops below the action level and water levels drop in adjacent wells, additional evaluations may be
performed to determine if the impacts are a result of mining and/or dewatering activities. If it is
determined that impacts to groundwater elevations and decreasing water levels in adjacent wells
are the result of dewatering at the SerFer Pit, the mitigation plan may include the following actions:
1. The existing well may be modified to operate under lower ground water conditions. This
could include re-drilling the existing well to deeper depths or lowering the pumps.
