Assodates
OBJECTIVES:
subject Whirlwind Project
Ore Stockpile Pad Liner System
Cushion Material Design
by KFM ob No 073-81745
ed by Date 01/10/08
eet No 1 of 8
ved nI- Sh
Design the minimum thickness of Cushion Material to be placed above the proposed geosynthetic clay
liner (GCL) for the Ore Stockpile Pad liner system at the Whirlwind Mine.
GIVEN:
Maximum size of equipment anticipated to travel over the liner system is a Caterpillar Model 950H
Wheel Loader with an operating weight of 40,345 pounds and a maximum bucket capacity of 4.5 cubic
yards (Loader specifications are attached).
ASSUMPTIONS:
• Maximum stress allowed on the liner is 8 pounds per square inch (psi);
• Assume that the loader is full with material having a unit weight of 110 pounds per cubic foot (pcf),
providing a gross loaded weight of approximately 53,800 lb;
• Assume that 55 percent of the total weight is supported on the front axle (i.e., 29,590 lb); and
• Assume point loading at one of the front tires, with additional stress applied by the second front tire
at an assumed distance of 9.5 feet.
11 Stresses imposed on the liner were evaluated using the Boussinesq Method. The attached spreadsheet
CALCULATIONS:
provides the results of the stress calculation at the first front tire (page 1), and the additional stress
imposed from the second front tire (page 2), at the location of the first front tire.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
A stress equivalent to, or less than, the recommended design stress of 8 psi is achieved by placement of a
cushion material with a minimum thickness of 2.5 feet. `
•
Cushi-MaI?
