Spacing control shall be,resumed using the original guides, and the number of trees
per acre shall not be materially increased or decreased by the method of selecting
planting spots. No tree shall be planted closer than fifty percent (50%) of the spacing
requirement to another planted tree.
c. Whenever possible, planting spots shall be selected where stationary protection,
such as stumps, logs and terrain breaks, are located on the south to west side of the
tree or shrub. Where stationary material is not available within the spacing
allocation, planter shall protect the trees or shrubs by placing the largest
transportable woody or inert material over three inches (3") in diameter, available
within the specified spacing distance, on the southwest side of the tree or shrub.
Where possible, these materials will be placed within one inch (1") of the tree, except
where larger pieces will provide protection when placed further away. When round
material is used, it shall be placed in a manner which prevents it from rolling.
Transportable material will never be placed on the uphill side of the tree or shrub.
Should transportable or stationary material not be available, the tree or shrub shall
still be planted.
d. Before constructing the planting hole, CONTRACTOR shall clear the planting spot of
all limbs, logs, bark, rotten wood, rock and loose debris and shall scalp duff, sod,
living plants, roots and other material unsuitable for tree growth, in order to expose
bare ground. Minimum scalping diameter for each planting spot is eighteen inches
(18").
e. Hole opening shall be determined to be feasible where PROJECT MANAGER can
find a plantable spot in three (3) attempts within the spacing requirement, and where
a hole can be opened in the planting spot in five (5) or less attempts with the hand
tool.
Hole Construction, Tree and Shrub Placement, Hole Filling, Species Mixing
a. The hole shall be located at the center of the scalped area. An open hole, broken
out on three (3) sides, and deep and wide enough to fully accommodate the roots of
the tree or shrub plus a small volume (approximately 0.1 ounce) of hydrated
Polyaccrylimide is required. The opening of a hole without breaking it out on three
(3) sides shall not be permitted.
b. The trees and shrubs shall be planted in the center of the prepared hole;, deep
enough so that the hydrated Polyaccrylimide can be accommodated at the base of
the hole, and one half inch (1/2") of soil can be placed on top of the plug, level with
the surrounding soil surface, to seal the plug into the ground. Plug growing media
shall not be distorted or broken from the root system during the planting process. If
the media is broken, the tree or shrub shall be planted as described herein, ensuring
that the exposed roots are not doubled up, twisted, spiraled, bunched, jammed or
compressed in the planting hole.
c. Soil shall be filled in and firmed around the plugs. Rock shall be kept out of the
holes. Soil shall be filled in and firmed progressively so no loose soil or air pockets
remain, and tree is as firmly planted as soil conditions allow. Firming of the soil shall
be done so that tree and root systems are not damaged. After planting, the tree
stem shall be erect and free to grow. The tree or shrub shall not be weighted down
with mud or debris. Firming soil with the heel of the foot is not permitted.
13
i
i
