Planting of trees and shrubs will occur in the following manner: <br />Hand tools <br />It is anticipated that all trees shall be hand planted. The hand tools used by <br />CONTRACTOR shall have a minimum fourteen inch (14") length and four inch (4") <br />minimum width planting blade. The head or scalping blade of a mattock is not to be <br />included in the minimum length measurement. Use of dibbles and planting bars is not <br />allowed. <br />Care of Trees and Shrubs: <br />a. Trees and shrubs shall be protected at all times from drying, heating, smothering, <br />freezing, crushing, drowning, abrasion, rapid temperature fluctuations, or contact <br />with injurious substances. <br />b. Shipping containers containing trees and shrubs shall be opened only in full <br />shade, and shall not be exposed to direct sunlight. Shipping containers shall not <br />be dropped or tossed. Punctured or torn shipping containers shall be <br />immediately sealed. <br />C. Trees and shrubs shall not be removed from shipping containers until needed for <br />planting. ' <br />d. Trees and shrubs shall be planted without root or top pruning. If culling is <br />necessary, or if mold, dry roots, evidence of injury or dying is observed, the <br />condition will be immediately brought to the attention of the PROJECT <br />MANAGER. <br />e. Trees and shrubs in planting bags or trays shall have only their tops exposed. <br />f. Trees and shrubs shall not be removed from planting bag or cell until <br />immediately before planting. They shall be gently removed one at a time to <br />prevent injury, and quickly and gently inserted into the planting hole. <br />g. Trees and shrubs carried in planting bags or trays shall not exceed the amount <br />that can be carried and removed without injury, or which can be planted before <br />critical heating or drying occurs. Trees and shrubs placed in bags or trays shall <br />be planted out and not returned to storage. <br />Spacing, Spot Selection, and Planting Spot <br />a. Trees are to be planted in pods, or groups, of thirty (30) trees per pod. The trees <br />within a pod are to be planted on an eight foot (8') spacing. Five (5) pods will be <br />planted per acre. Pods must be spaced no closer than thirty five feet (35') from each <br />other, edge to edge. Shrubs shall, be planted in a random pattern, but never within a <br />tree pod, or group. <br />b. Trees shall be in pods distributed over the Project Area, and planted on the spacing <br />described above, provided that for individual trees the spacing may be varied as <br />much as fifty percent (50%) in any direction in order to attain the best plantable spot. <br />12
