Bureau of Reclamation Division oitecwr
2764 Compass Drive
Grand Junction, Colorado
81506
RR: Sediment Removal, Paonia Reservoir
Dear Mr. 'Van Roosendaal:
The Division of Minerals and Geology is about to begin remedial work at the previously reclaimed
Hawks Nest Mine, located near Somerset, Colorado, Although this mine was reclaimed some
time ago, revegetation efforts at some portions of the mine site have been Iargely unsuccessful.
Field observations indicate that the lack of vegetative success may be due to unfavorable soil
structure. In order'to overcome this problem, the Division is drafting plans to amend the existing
soils by incorporating organic materials and clay/silt/sand sized materials into the ground. We
have identified the-sediment deposits within Paonia reservoir as a possible source for the inorganic
materials which we need.
The Division is interested in acquiring permission from the Bureau of Reclamation to excavate
sediment materials located above the water line of Paonia reservoir. Currently, we estimate that
about 8,000 cubic yards of material will be excavated and hauled from the reservoir to the Hawks
Nest Mine.
Our initial plan is to award a contract for the excavation and removal of the sediments from the.
reservoir. Because we desire relatively dry, rather than wet, materials, we propose to begin
operations in April, prior to the water level rising above the elevation of the sediments.
We plan to complete excavation and hauling operations within twenty days of beginning work.
Our contractor will be required to repair any damage to the ground surface above the normal
water line so that the area is returned to its pre-construction condition.
Please let me know whether the Bureau of Reclamation is willing to allow the excavation of the
