The Hawks Nest is located
north of Highway 133, east of the town of Somerset. Reclamation is scheduled to begin in the
spring of 1999.
Previous reclamation activities at Hawks Nest were only moderately successful. This is partially
due to the sparsity of soil used during reclamation construction. In order to achieve a greater
degree of reclamation success, it will be essential to use a soil cover over the existing ground
surface. Howr..ver, there, is no available source of soil material on site_
We are aware abut CDOT generates a fair amount of soil/dirt while maintaining Highway 133
between Somerset and the top of McClure Pass. I have noted that some of this material is
stockpiled nears the intersection with the Kebler Pass Road and Highway 133.
As we discussed by phone today, Minerals and Geology is interested in obtaining the stockpilcd
materials, and any additional materials generated during the coming winter and spring, for use
during reclamation in 1999.
)nitially, it appears that Division contractors will remove the stockpilcd materials to the Hawks
Nest, The Division will require in the Invitation and Bid that the successful low bidder provide
to CDOT proof of liability insurance and a traffic control plan. We will require that the
contractor contact CDOT directly to ensure that appropriate measures are incorporated into the
traffic control plan.
We would be happy to discuss with CDOT the possibility of CDOT transporting materials
generated during the next six months directly to the Hawks Nest, rather than to the stockpile .
