Trinidad Basin Mining Company, The Trinidad Basin Strip Mine
Revoked Permit No. C-81-048
On August 19, representatives from the Coal Program made an inspection of the sediment
ponds at the Trinidad Basin Strip Mine, located approximately 25 miles northwest of
Trinidad, Colorado, and west of the old town of Ludlow, Colorado. During the inspection,
we found that one of the ponds, situated immediately adjacent to the county road that runs
through the mine site, had an embankment that was beginning to exhibit signs of imminent
failure. Additionally, the principal spillway pipe inlet had clogged, resulting in the water
level in the pond rising to within five to six feet from the top of the embankment.
Because of the estimated 500,000 cubic feet of water this pond was retaining that could
come flowing out of the embankment onto the.adjacent public road, please obtain enough
money-from our forfeited bonds account for this site to pay for someone to repair this
embankment as soon as possible. I have discussed this situation with Steve Renner, and he
has given me verbal approval for the repair job. Thanks.
