Erickson
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Reclamation of Linden Avenue Railroad Loadout, Trinidad Basin Coal Mine
Dear Mr. Erickson:
This letter is in response to Daniel Hernandez letter of August 24, 1994. We are willing to
consider the possible disposal of the coal refuse from the loadout and may be able to use the
coal at our power plant as a fuel.
In order to determine if the coal refuse may be disposed of at the Trinidad Landfill, we will
require additional testing beyond the analytical procedures recommended by Ron Forlina of
the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. We would also require testing
for creosote and the acid generation potential of the coal refuse. Following the submittal of
the test results, we will make a determination as to whether we will accept the material for
disposal at the landfill.
We have also discussed the possibility of using the coal at our power plant as a fuel. You
may wish to speak with David Brunelli, Power and Light Superintendent, about this as a
possible use for the material. Mr. Brunelli has mentioned that he would require a proximate
analysis and free swelling index on the material prior to making any determination on its
possible.use.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Respectfully yours,
T S. Haugen, P.E.
Public Works Director
CC'. Ron Forlina, DPHE
