' 3.0 METHANE MONITORING AND RESULTS
A summary of the most recent and historical field analytical results is included in Table 1. Field gas
measurements from the monitoring points had methane concentrations ranging from 0.0 percent in monitoring
points B14, B17, B20, B26, B29, B30, and B35 to 93.0 percent in monitoring point B33. Carbon dioxide and
oxygen were also measured and their concentrations varied with the amount of methane. As methane in the
soils increases, it displaces oxygen and carbon dioxide, creating anerobic conditions that result in death of
vegetation and staining of the soils. Historical concentrations of methane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in each
monitoring point are displayed on the monitoring point concentration diagrams located in Appendix B.
' Additional monitoring was undertaken at the former site of the Golden Eagle Mine in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
This monitoring consisted of the measurement of gas emanating from the former mine's south airshaft
location. At this location, a valve exists to access the shaft. The valve, when opened, exhibited positive
pressure. This flow was monitored for the presence of methane using a Lantec GA-90. The methane
concentration at this location was measured at 88.7 percent during the 2004 sampling event, 88.6 percent
during the 2005 sampling event and 91.9 percent during the 2006 sampling event.
Effected vegetation in the seepage area was also examined. Figure 3 shows the effected areas as delineated
during 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The effected acreage was about 146 acres in 2000. The effected acreage
in 2005 was the same as in 2004, approximately 32 acres, and approximately 50.2 acres in 2006.
2006 Methane Monitoring Report (11.02.06).doc 3-1
