SAN JUAN COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT
1512 Greene Street, P.O. Box 466
Silverton , Colorado 81433
970-387-5772-Fax 970-387-5019
July 1, 2008
Division of Minerals and Geology
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Eureka Gravel Pit # M-1990-070
San Juan County
The Eureka Gavel Pit M-1990-070 in San Juan County is and has been an
"inactive" mining gravel operation and some reclamation and safety measures
have been done at the pit site. The County is stockpiling gravel at the Eureka pit
that is being hauled in from the new private gravel operation two miles west of
Eureka.
There has been some minor sloughing on the slope above the pit and that was
caused by the winter avalanche and spring snow melt and also from the dumping
of materials off of county roads #25 form last falls mudslides being removed and
pushed over the edge of the road.
San Juan County has meet most requirements set forth by the board and
recommendations by the Minerals and Geology inspector. The County has done
the following steps to meet the MLRB requirements since 2004.
1. A catchment trench and berm was dug and constructed at the base of the
excavated slope in September of 2005.
2. County road #25 was widened and excavated materials pushed over the
so it can maybe fill some of the scarpe area above the excavated slope.
The County widened the road to between 25' and 30' to make travel safer
to the public. This was also done in September of 2005 and some slough
was removed and the road widened and bladed in the spring of 2008.
Louis Girodo
San Juan County
Road Overseer
