III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection of the Bowie No. 1 Mine (Permit No. C-1981-038) conducted by
Marcia Talvitie of the Colorado DRMS on 20-Jun-2008. The project superintendent for the East
Mine reclamation work participated in that portion of the inspection.
Sediment Ponds
Access to Pond 3 (Figure 1) and Pond 4 (Figure 2) was gained via the cabled gate located on
Stephens Gulch Road. The road to the ponds had been surfaced with coarse gravel, and was
traversable by vehicle. 5ut-fgeed/51u/-&nc2 1Yr('Ae(,-5 al)d/ofjl)f,Z® 5'12 #oced o.S
reujlec
Both ponds were dry, and the impoundment structures appeared to be sound (Figures 3 and 4).
The gate valve at the outlet from Pond 3 was in the open position (Figure 5).
Pond bottoms and side slopes were well vegetated and stable. However, a stand of Canada
thistle was observed low on the east bank of Pond 3.
Reclamation Activities at East Mine
High wall backfill and slope grading work was continuing on the various benches of the East
Mine. Equipment being utilized included excavators, bull dozer and rock trucks.
A water truck was observed spraying the haul roads for dust control.
Portions of the outer slope of the Fan Bench have been seeded and mulched (Figure 6).
Bowie No. 1 Mine C-1981-038 20-Jun-2008
-1-
