Springs and Seeps
• The spring and seep monitoring program sampled flow and water chemistry on springs
within a one- mile radius of the underground workings once annually during the late
summer of the year, to ensure that geohydrologic changes associated with the mine do not
diminish the water quantity or quality of springs. Four springs were monitored annually
during August (Appendix Q. Monitoring was terminated after release of liability for areas
of underground mining.
Ponds and Direct Discharges
All sediment ponds and direct discharge points are permitted under NPDES Permits CO-
0000906. Sampling stations for this permit are described below.
MDNE-1: NE-001 was a grab sample station from the New Elk Mine water discharge pipe
located on the Purgatoire River for NPDES Discharge Permit CO-0000906. The
station was established to monitor the quality and quantity of mine water discharge from,
the New Elk Mine. During the third quarter of 1989, the mine was sealed and the discharge
of mine inflow water was discontinued.
NE-001-G: NE-001-G is a site under NPDES Permit No. COG-310069. This site was
used to discharge water from remedial activities at the UST facilities area. NE-00 I-G was
sampled at its outfall prior to discharging into ditch D-16, which flows into Pond NE007, a
site monitored under NPDES CO-0000906. This site was eliminated during 1999 with
reclamation of the remediation system and termination of Permit COG-31 0069 as
• approved by CDPHE.
NE-004: A grab sample station of the discharge from the primary spillway of sediment
pond 004. This site predominantly handles stormwater runoff from the New Elk
underground development waste pile.
NE-005: A grab sample station of the discharge from the primary spillway of sediment
pond 005 which treats stormwater and industrial runoff from the area east of the trucking
offices. This pond was reclaimed in 2003 and the site is no longer monitored.
NE-006: The thickener recycling pond 006 (prep Plant process water) is a nondischarging
facility.
NE-007: A grab sample station of the discharge from the primary spillway of sediment
pond 007. This site treats stormwater runoff from the East Portal of the New Elk facilities
area as well as handling flow from NE-033.
NE-008: A grab sample location at the primary spillway outfall of sediment pond 008
located at the base of the Refuse Disposal Area of the New Elk Mine.
NE-009: A grab sample station of the New Elk Mine water discharge pipe located in
Apache Canyon. The station was established to monitor the quality of mine water
discharge from the New Elk Mine; the mine has been inactive and sealed since 1989 with
. no discharge occurring at this site.
7
