• 2.04.7 Hydrology Description
7. Munger Creek - East Salt Creek Tributary
Stockponds Within Permit and Adiacent Area:
Numerous stock ponds, all having a storage volume less than 20 acre-feet,
have been identified within the permit and adjacent area. These ponds are
man-made and historically serve as stockponds. The ponds are sited to
collect run-off during the spring season. Although the ponds are a significant
hydrologic feature of the permit and adjacent area and their existence is
currently important to domestic animals and wildlife, total contribution of these
ponds to the local water budget is not significant.
There are 23 inventoried ponds in the permit and adjacent area. The ponds
are numbered 1 through 23 as shown on Map 9. The embankment on four of
the ponds has been washed out so they have not been monitored.
• One quality sample and two field samples have been obtained from Pond 6
which is located near the wash plant and clean coal stockpile area. The pH
varied from 7.1 to 9.6 su. The conductivity was less than 1,000 umhos/cm.
Ruby Lee Reservoir is located approximately one mile southeast of the permit
boundary. It is fed by ephemeral channels and ditches from Big Salt Wash.
Ruby Lee Reservoir is decreed for 367 acre-feet of storage. This reservoir is
below the coal seam to be mined so it will not be undermined.
Springs Within Permit and Adjacent Area
Springs in the permit and adjacent area have been mapped and described
based on data available from the BLM GIS data base, a URS
hydrogeologic field reconnaissance of the mine facilities area, and
historical information collected for Dorchester Coal Company. Detailed
spring and seep surveys were conducted in 1982 and 1983 for the Fruita
Mine permit application, which was for the mine proposed by Dorchester
Coal Company in 1984, but never started. Map 9, Hydrologic Monitoring
Location Map, shows the location of the springs.
Permit Application
2.04-30 06/08
