•
2.05.6 Mitigation of the Impacts of Mining Operations
The mine water discharge has a slightly poorer quality than the natural
run-off from the lower ephemeral channels. The TDS of the surface water
(SW-1 and SW-2) run-off is less than 1,500 mg/I with low concentrations
of iron and manganese. Mine water discharge may add to the total
dissolved solid content of the natural surface run-off.
The water collected at SW-3 is extremely poor. It has an average TDS
concentration of 19,730 mg/l. Apparently this ephemeral stream reach is
rich in soluble sulfate since the average sulfate concentration is 11,272
mg/I.
As explained above in (b)(i), Sediment ponds will improve the quality of
the surface water flowing through and out of the proposed permit area and
adjacent area because sediment loads will be reduced. This will reduce
the total suspended solids in the surface water regime. Additionally the
sediment ponds, by temporarily retaining run-off, will reduce flood hazards
in surface coal mining and reclamation operations.
•
•
Surface run-off from the disturbed area and mine water discharge does
not flow towards the Big Salt Wash drainage. Therefore, Big Salt wash
will not be impacted during the life of the operation.
Permit Application
2.05-108 06/08
