0 2.05.6 Mitigation of the Impacts of Mining Operations
The flooded mine workings could also affect the ground water quality and
quantity in the overlying Upper and Lower Perched Water Zones.
However, Mesaverde Formation transmits little water. Therefore, the
impact the flooded mine workings will have on the quantity and quality of
the surrounding strata should be minor.
The perched water above the Cameo Seam is monitored by monitoring
well 7-34-7. The quality of water in this perched water being zone shows
pH in the range of 7.5 to 8.0, conductivity in the 550 to 3,330umhos/cm
range, total recoverable iron in the 0.01 to 0.15 mg/I range and
manganese in the 0.007 to 0.11 mg/I range.
The perched water below the Cameo Seam is monitored by monitoring
well 8-2-8. The quality of water in this perched water being zone shows
pH in the range of 6.9 to 7.1, conductivity in the 1,840 to 2,650umhos/cm
range, total recoverable iron in the 0.13 to 25.0 mg/I range and
0 manganese in the 0.35 to 0.51 mg/I range.
The water in the Cameo Seam is monitored by monitoring well 8-3-10.
The quality of water in this perched water being zone shows pH in the
range of 6.2 to 7.2, conductivity in the 1,476 to 6,100umhos/cm range,
total recoverable iron in the 8.8 to 143 mg/I range and manganese in the
0.48 to 2.88 mg/I range. The well has been basically dry during 2007 with
the sampler noting mud at total depth during August and November 2007.
It is unlikely the Cameo coal zone contains any significant water at this
location. Map 10, Water Bearing Zones, Mesaverde Formation, predicts'
virtually all of the Cameo seam in the permit area is dry.
Another indicator of the quality of water in the Cameo seam is monitoring
well F-50. The quality of water in the Cameo seam was monitored one
time in August 1983. Conductivity was 2,088 umhos/cm, ph was 8.3, total
iron was 11.0 mg/I and manganese was 0.448 mg/I. The coal seam is
saturated at this location. Monitoring well F-50 was sampled again in
March 2008. Conductivity was 2,300 umhos/cm, ph was 6.9, total iron
• was 0.55 mg/I and manganese was 0.284 mg/I.
Permit Application 2.05-104 06/08
