•
2.05.6 Mitigation of the Impacts of Mining Operations
The pH and EC are in the range of expected values for this type of
material. The acid base potential demonstrates the material is not acid
forming. The iron value for the roof and floor is elevated in one sample.
Manganese levels are relatively consistent.
Ground water in the vicinity of the coal mine waste disposal area is
characterized by alluvial well VB-06-10. The 2006, 2007 and 1St quarter
2008 water samples were analyzed and the average pH was 7.1 with a
range of 6.9 to 7.4. The average laboratory conductivity was 91,685 with
a range of 69,079 to 118,821 umhos/cm. The average iron and
manganese concentration are 18.1 and 0.61 mg/I respectively. The
monitoring data shows an average total dissolved solids concentration of
65,274 mg/L.
•
Ground water in the vicinity of the coal preparation plant and clean coal
stockpile is characterized by alluvial well VB-06-03. The 2007 and 1St
quarter 2008 water samples were analyzed and the average pH was 7.3
with a range of 7.1 to 7.4. The average conductivity was 14,432 with a
range of 13,200 to 15,600 umhos/cm. The average iron and manganese
concentration are 1.2 and 0.09 mg/I respectively. The monitoring data
shows an average total dissolved solids concentration of 8,487 mg/L.
Groundwater in the alluvium of East Salt Creek is as measured near the
mouth of Munger Canyon is also high in salts. The average conductivity in
this groundwater for the 2007 water year is 4,370 umhos/cm based on
measurements at the McClane and Munger Canyon mine monitoring well
GW-3.
The predicted gob pile leachate has a much lower salt level than the
adjacent ground water measured at VB-06-03, VB-06-10 and McClane's
GW-3. Leachate from the gob pile will lower conductivity and TDS
concentrations in the groundwater in the vicinity of the coal mine waste
disposal area and the groundwater along East Salt Creek.
•
Leachate from the coal mine waste disposal area could slightly increase
the iron and manganese concentration in the ground water.
Permit Application
2.05-102 06/08
