Twenty Mile Mine Amendment - Baseline Vegetation Study Plan
samples. Each shrub that is rooted within and whose crown emerges from the ground within the
belt transect will be recorded by species. Shrubs with multiple stems growing from a specific
crown will be recorded as one plant.
2.7 Sample Population Statistical Adequacy
Sample population statistics will be provided demonstrating that the sample population is
comprised of at least the minimum number of required samples, and that sample adequacy has
been met or the maximum sample size has been reached for each vegetation parameter. The
sample adequacy formula contained in Equation 1 will be used to determine the minimum
required size of the sample collected. A minimum of 15 sample observations shall be taken even
if statistical sample adequacy is achieved with fewer observations.
Equation 1
t 2 S 2
t2 7n = (C 2
Where:
n = minimum sample size
s2 = Sample variance (n-1 degrees of freedom)
d = Precision (0.10 for cover and production; 0.15 for woody plant density)
x = Sample arithmetic mean
t = The (a=.10) t-table value for a 1 tail t-test, n-1 degrees of freedom (infinite degrees
of freedom may be used if n>30)
n = Sample size
3 Baseline Data Report
The baseline study data will be compiled into a final report. The report will contain a description
of procedures used in the baseline inventory including; delineation and mapping of vegetation,
general sampling methodology, selection of sample points, and quadrat and transect
characteristics. Specific calendar dates of all sampling will be noted. All raw data will be
included. The report will also contain an evaluation of sample adequacy, a compilation of the
plant species list, and a description of each vegetation community sampled. A map showing the
location of all vegetation communities sampled and the location of sample points will be
provided with the report. The final report will discuss the degree to which the pre-mine data is
representative of local conditions. Data will be compared to county averages for the land use
types to the extent that this information is available.
8
