United Companies
Weed Control Program
Revised May 2008
Weed control is an important part of United Companies overall program to maintain
company operating sites whether they be plantsites or gravel pits. This program mainly
targets plants that have been classified as noxious weeds by the State of Colorado and
the counties where United Companies has facilities. This program includes a section for
control of Tamarisk and Russian Olive.
According to State law (CRS 35-5.5, the Colorado weed Management Act), noxious
weeds must be managed. Integrated Weed Management is a strategy that has been
suggested as the structure for control programs. Elements of this approach include:.
Preventing the encroachment of noxious weed species into un-infested areas.
Detecting and eradicating new weed species
Containing large-scale infestations
Controlling large-scale infestations using an integrated approach
Revegetation
United sites have active control measures for noxious weed species. The program
consists of a competent qualified weed control specialist treating each location a
minimum of twice a year. Several locations receive three treatments a year.
The following is a description and explanation of targeted weed species..
Hoary Cress - Hoary Cress is a creeping perennial which needs to be managed early in
the season. This plant should be treated with Escort XP @ 1oz./acre when it is in the
bolt to early bloom (cauliflower) stage. Retreatment of this plant may be required in the
fall regrowth phase.
Russian Knapweed - Russian Knapweed is a creeping perennial and should be
controlled twice during the season. The first treatment should occur in the bud stage
with Milestone @ 6 oz./acre. The fall regrowth treatment will use Redeem R&P @ 24
oz./acre when the water table is at its lowest.
Perennial Pepperweed - this plant is also a creeping perennial and will be controlled by
using Telar DF or Escort XP @ 10z./acre in the bolt to early bloom stage. A fall
retreatment may be necessary using either of these herbicides.
