Chapter IV
Water released from settling ponds will not exceed an average monthly total suspended
solids concentration of 30 mg/I nor a daily maximum of 70 mg/I. During wet conditions
this limit is 0.5 mg/I settleable solids. The pond discharges are not required to meet the
effluent limitation where it can be demonstrated to the regulatory authority that the flow
results from a storm are greater than the 10 year/24 hour frequency.
8. Monitoring and Reporting.
a. General.
Mid-Continent monitors and reports surface and groundwater in compliance with
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) effluent requirements and the
Colorado River Salinity Standards (CRS), 1973 as the basis for evaluating the effect the
mine operations may have on surface and ground water quality and quantity.
During the preceding permit term, TR-4, approved Aug. 11, 1986, allowed for
modification of the water monitoring program. As approved, samples are taken during
peak flow, in June, and low flow, in October. The hydrograph in Fig. IV-C-1 shows
mean monthly flow. Station No. 2 Sutey-Spring Creek (refuse pile underflow) was
added to the sample list for 1986-1987 to observe any possible changes in the quality
or quantity associated with the expansion of the Sutey refuse pile, including the
extension of the underdrain.
The parameters for analysis of surface water and ground water include:
Field: Lab:
• Flow or water surface level Bicarbonate
Temperature Sulfate
pH Sodium
Conductivity Calcium
Chloride
Magnesium
SAR
IRON
TDS
TSS*
* Surface water only.
Monitoring Sites
Ground Water Surface Water
P-1 No. 6 No. 20, Coal Creek
P-2 No. 9 No. 3, Bear Creek
P-3 No. 11 No. 5, Dutch Creek
P-5 GE-1 No. 1, Disney Creek
P-6 GS-1 No. 3, Sutey Creek &
P-7 GW-1 Sutey Underdrain
P-8 AT-2A
01 AT-2B
21
