i•
During the late winter /early spring of 2000, once the ground is thawed and active growth is
observed, approximately two acres of Refuse Area #1 will be sprayed to control Cheatgrass on
select areas dominated by this species. In no case will the treatment cover more than 2.8 acres
(20%) of the 14.07 acres of this site. The herbicides that will be used are Roundup Pro and Oust.
Each will be applied separately. Roundup Pro will be the herbicide primarily used. Oust will be
used on an experimental basis since only limited information is available concerning its effects on
seedling establishment.
Roundup Pro will be applied at a rate of one pint per acre in a manner consistent with its labeling.
This low rate is intended to control cheatgrass while minimizing the effects on perennial vegetation.
Oust will be applied at a rate of 0.5 to 0.75 ounces per acre. Use of Oust will be limited to a
maximum of 0.5 acres for the purpose of this treatment. The primary concern with use of Oust is its
potential adverse effects on the reseeding soon after treatment. The label and Dupont literature
recommend waiting 90 to 160 days following treatment before planting grasses depending on
species. No such recommendations exist for fort and shrub plantings. The areas treated with Oust
will be considered experimental in nature with subsequent fall reseeding if adequate seedlings do
not survive.
• Approximately one week following herbicide application the treated areas will be broadcast seeded
and harrowed. The proposed seed mix will be strongly dominated by forts and shrubs. Table
V.13a shows the proposed seed mix. Larger seeded species will be seeded prior to harrowing to
allow deeper soil coverage than the smaller seeded species that will be seeded following harrowing.
In the event that seedlings do not become adequately established on the Oust treated portions a fall
seeding will also occur.
The boundaries of the treated areas will be clearly marked for future reference. A detailed
description of the actual treatment(s) will be included in the 2000 Annual Reclamation Report.
•
Mid-Term Review 2002 (8/2002) V-51
