1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Summary
Field studies on the Hayden Gulch Mine. site were conducted in
Spring 1977 just after snowmelt,. There was no running water.
on the site itself. Stream low was encountered below the
Twentymile sandstone outcrop. The quality of this water was
similar to that of ground water in the upper reaches ,. but
Lower Sage and Dry creeks had much higher concentrations of
dissolved solids, sodium, and sulfate.
All four of the streams in the study area are dry most of .the
year. Except during surface. runoff from snowmelt or rainfall,
when they do flow the streams are fed by seepage from aquifers;
during these periods the lower reaches of Sage and Dry creeks
show increased dissolved-minerals content because of seepage
from the Lewis shale. There is no surface water at the mine
site except for brief periods of snowmelt or runoff from
intense rainfall.
1.2 Purpose
Surface water was monitored at the site of the proposed Hayden
Gulch Mine and transportation corridor to describe pre-
development conditions. The monitoring program was designed
to comply Leith the rules and regulations of the Colorado Dfined
Land Reclamation Board.
Undertaken before enactment of the final rules and regulations,
the project was designed in anticipation of more stringent
regulations than were actually adopted; as a result, the data
collected were more detailed than necessary. This will even-
tually be to the advantage of W. R. Grace ~ Co. if more detailed
data are needed to respond to inquiries concerning project-
related impacts.
1.3 Scope of Work
Under these requirements detailed maps of the area and certain
information must be supplied. This information include a plan
for managing water from dewatering operations or runoff from
disturbed areas, piled material, and operating surfaces to
protect against pollution of surface water during and after
mining; also required is an estimate of the project water.requi-
rements and delineation of the water rights or sources of pro-
• ject water and their dependability, both physically and legally.
