Chapter V
Topsoil is removed to a pre-determined depth,
based on soil studies, and is transported to an
approved soils storage area that will not be
disturbed during the life of mine operations.
The topsoil pile is then seeded with an approved
temporary seed mix.
At the end of the mine life, the following plan is then put into effect:
— All structures are removed and the area is backfilled,
graded and compacted to stabilize the disturbed
area.
— Topsoil is redistributed to an approved depth.
— Topsoil samples are taken to determine which
amendments may need to be added to enhance
growth.
— An approved seed mix is planted, either by hand
broadcasting, drill seeding, or hydro-mulching.
— Tests are performed later to determine the success
of the revegetation.
— After the area has been deemed successfully
revegetated, site drainage structures are removed.
The purpose of revegetation is to stabilize the soil surface to achieve erosion control
equal to premining levels with the exception of those area that may be utilized for
different purposes in accordance with approved postmining land use plans. The
company plans to seed or plant disturbed areas during the first favorable planting
season after final preparation for seeding or planting. The seeds and plant materials
have been grown and/or collected from sources of similar habitat.
Mid-Continent's reclamation plan consists of three distinct phases: PAST
RECLAMATION (1966 - 1987); INTERIM (1988 - Mine Closure, estimated after
2020); FINAL (post mine closure until reclamation is complete).
3
