Mulching Techniques. <br /> In revegetation projects along steep slopes in Coal Basin two types , <br /> of mulching have been used with good success. The preferred method; <br /> of mulching is to apply straw at the rate of 1 1/2 to 2 tons/acre. ' <br /> If necessary a separate tackifier is used. <br /> The alternative method is to apply hydro-mulch with conweb 2000 <br /> tackifier at the rate of 30 lbs/acre. <br /> Mid-Continent reserves the right to try other mulching techniques, ' <br /> such as jute mesh and the many other straw blanket mulches that are <br /> now being developed. <br /> e. Irrigation. <br /> Coal Basin's precipitation ranges from 25 to 35 inches per year and' <br /> in most cases irrigation is not necessary. The company has, in the <br /> past, irrigated parts of the old coal refuse pile revegetated <br /> areas. This has proven to be beneficial during dry summer weather. <br /> As the pile has increased in size and elevation, this has not <br /> proven feasible, due to the distances from water sources. They <br /> iannual precipitation has proven to be adequate for revegetation. <br /> f. Pest and Disease Control. <br /> Damage to vegetation by pests and diseases is not a problem in Coal: <br /> Basin because of the high altitude and cold weather. The U.S. <br /> Forest Service inspects the area annually for pest and disease' <br /> damage as part of its livestock grazing management program. In; <br /> addition, Mid-Continent's environmental staff is careful to watch, <br /> for any signs of problems. <br /> g. Methods to Determine Success of Revegetation. <br /> Western Resource Development Corp. of Boulder, Colorado has, <br /> developed our reference area plan. Meetings were held in 1979 and, <br /> 1980 with CMLRD and the OSM, who reviewed and approved the plan., <br /> Three main reference areas have been established and a number of, <br /> small site specific areas have been studied and cross referenced to <br /> the main reference areas. Approved methods and standards (by CMLRD� <br /> and OSM) are being used in the statistical analysis of the, <br /> herbaceous cover and productivity species diversity and woody plant; <br /> density.
