Chapter V
If it is feasible, the crest of the cut could be flattened as much as possible, to slopes
of 45 to 26 degrees (1:1 or 2:1). Material could be pushed from the top of the cut,
to fall and enhance the buttress below. This would be done with a dozer or
backhoe, and it would be necessary to construct a pioneer road to the crest of the
cut in order to allow access for the work to be done.
TYPE (3): HIGH THICK FILL, ROAD
In areas-where topographic conditions did not allow construction of the road in a
cut, sections of road were constructed on fill, with slopes close to the angle of
repose, and probably using the side-cast method, no compaction, no preparation of
the foundations.
Stability of the fills is marginal, and the surface is subject to erosion, sloughing, rilling
and gullying.
The reclamation objective is to flatten the fill surface to a slope of 1.5:1 or flatter, and
to prevent erosion, gullying and rilling by careful surface drainage. Then vegetate.
The reclamation procedure entails pushing material from the upper part of the fill
down the slope of the fill to the projected toe. The material will be spread out in lifts
of no more than 12 inches thickness. Each layer will be completed, levelled and
• compacted evenly by routing the equipment over the width of the embankment.
The crest of the reconstructed fill will be rounded and shaped to eliminate sharp
changes of the slope to control erosion.
i
TYPE (4): HIGH THICK FILL, MINE BENCH
Some fill areas were constructed at mine benches, either to deposit excess material
obtained from excavation of the bench cut or as a means to expand the bench
space.
The stability of the fills is marginal and there are problems of erosion, gullying, rilling
and sloughing at the fill surface.
The reclamation objective is to flatten the upper portion of the fill to a slope of 1.5:1
or flatter, and to prevent surface water from entering the fill surface.
TYPE (5): HIGH THIN (SLIVER) FILL
Deposits of fill material were dumped on the steep slopes below benches and roads
in some areas.
31
