• Resources, Inc. , in the Coal Basin area. The proposed subsidence study area
is located in both Pitkin and Gunnison Counties, Colorado.
The proposed subsidence monitoring site over the multi-lift longwail
panels is a very remote and rugged mountainous area. Elevations in the
monitoring area vary from approximately 11,000 ft to 12 ,000 ft (Figure 2) .
The overburden section above the coal seam is approximately 2000 to 2500 ft
in thickness.
Site Access:
The Coal Basin area is reached by a paved road that extends from Redstone,
Colorado to the Coal Basin Mine Office. From there, well maintained dirt
haulage and access roads extend to the various mines in the Basin.
The proposed subsidence monitoring area is accessed by a foot trail that
• begins on the haulage and access road near the No. 5 line. The subsidence
monitoring area lies approximately 1.5 miles from, 'and 2000 ft in elevation
above , the No. 5 Mine road. Walking time from the No. 5 ;line road is about 3
hours.
Site Conditions :
The proposed site location is in a rugged mountainous area that is par-
tially forested. The area lies entirely within the White River and Gunnison
National Forests.. The construction of access roads to the area is impossible
because of county and U.S. Forest Service regulations. Because of this, the
study area can be accessed only by foot, horse or helecopter.
Because of its extremely high elevation, and severe winter weather, the
• proposed monitoring area will be inacc.>sable 'uring the winter. 'death...
and snow cover prohibit field work from October through the middle of June.
1
