v
Surface Drainage of the Preparation Plant Area
A proposal has been made to delete most of the Savage Pond
located at Mid-Continent Resources Preparation Plant Area. In
order to do this it must be shown that the four ponds constituting
discharge point 001 are adequately large enough to contain the
sediment and surface runoff from a 10 year - 24 hour precipitation
event.
The following computations are based on the Soil Conservation
Services' Procedures for Determining Peak Flows in Colorado (SCS)
and Applied Hydrology and Sedimentology for Disturbed Area (AHSDA)
(Barfield, et.al. ) .
In order to determine the arieal extent of disturbed area
which contributes flow to the four preparation area ponds , Map
• II-B-App, 7-Att. 3 from Mid-Continent' s permit application was
used. Areas 1 , lA and 2 were examined in order to determine the
total sediment loads and flow going to these ponds .
Area 1 includes the preparation plant, district office ,
employee parking and coal stockpiles. This area has almost no
vecetation and a relatively moderate slope.
Area 2 includes the Savage Shop and parking area . This area
also contains no vegetation and a relatively flat slope.
Area lA contains the steep outslope of the old refuse pile.
Although this area has a good vegetation cover it does not comprise
more than 50% of the total area.
59
