Water QualitE
• No water quality data exists in the Coal Basin Mine adjacent
area on the west side of Huntsman Ridge. This area is remote
with little land use other than limited grazing and recreational
uses , and little baseline data exists for the region as a whole .
Surface water quality in the East Muddy Creek is expected
to be somewhat different from water quality in the Coal Basin
area. The bedrock in the area consists of the Mesaaverde and
Wasatch formations as opposed to the Mesaverde and the easily
eroded Mancos shale on the east side of Huntsman Ridge . No
surface facilities of the mining operation such as mine portals ,
processing plants, or access routes are proposed in this area;
the land use will continue to be essentially unchanged. Mining
will take place approximately 2000 feet- below the ground surface
and will have minimal surface expression.
Water Use
No surface water diversions lie on the lease area in the East
Muddy Creek Drainage . Three ditch rights and two reservoir
storage rights lie rear the lease area in the adjacent area.
These rights are presented on Table 783 . 16-13 . in addition ,
there are numerous water diversions in the lower reaches of
the East Muddy Creek Drainage. Twenty-seven water rights lie
in T. 10S , R. 90W. ; 38 in T. 11S . , R. 90W. ; 34 in T. 11S . , R. 89W;
and 5 in T. 10S . , R. 89W. Most of these rights are irrigation
17
